Three months is the minimum. After that the rental runs month to month for as long as you need it, and when you are finished you call and we come get the trailer. That is the whole term. There is no annual contract to sign and no renewal date you have to remember.
The question comes up on nearly every first call, usually phrased as how long am I locked in. It is a fair thing to ask. Most people asking it have been burned once by a lease with an auto renewal buried on page four, or by a storage contract that was easier to start than to stop. So here is what the term actually means, why the three month floor exists at all, what month to month looks like in practice, and the one situation where we will tell you a trailer is the wrong answer.
- The minimum is three months. After that the rental continues month to month with no new term and no renewal paperwork.
- The floor exists because of two truck trips. Delivery and retrieval cost the same whether the trailer sits three weeks or three years.
- Ending it is a phone call. Empty the trailer, call (513) 772-9490, and we schedule the pickup.
- If you honestly only need storage for a few weeks, say so on the call and we will tell you a trailer is not your cheapest answer.
- Against a commercial warehouse lease the comparison is not close: three months against several years, one trailer against a minimum square footage, and nothing to build out.
How long can you rent a storage trailer?
There are really two phases and it helps to think about them separately. The first three months are the committed part. You agreed to the trailer, we delivered it, and that window is yours whether you fill it in week one or week ten.
Phase two is everything after that, and phase two has no end. The rental simply continues. Nothing renews, nothing resets, and no new term starts in month four. The arrangement in month seven is the same arrangement as month three, and the same is true in month thirty.
That is not a technicality, it is the reason this product exists. Overflow does not arrive on a schedule anybody can predict in January. A manufacturer who rented a 53 footer for a Q4 push often still has it in March because the volume never went back down. A contractor who took one for a six month job keeps it when the job runs long, which jobs do. Nobody has to renegotiate anything for that to happen. If you are not sure which size fits what you are storing, we walked through the math in how to choose a storage trailer size.
Why is there a three month minimum?
We would rather explain the economics than dress the minimum up as a policy. A storage trailer rental is not really a product you ship. It is a piece of equipment that leaves the yard, stops earning anything else for the whole time it is gone, and then has to be fetched back.
The fleet is a finite number of 28, 45, 48 and 53 foot dry vans. Every one parked at a customer site is one that cannot go to the next caller. That is fine when the rental runs long enough to be worth the two trips. It stops making sense when a trailer is delivered, sits for nineteen days, and gets retrieved.
The alternative would be charging a much higher monthly rate on short rentals to cover the same two trips over fewer months. Plenty of equipment companies do exactly that. We would rather hold one flat monthly rate and put a three month floor under it, because it is simpler to quote and it does not punish the customer who guesses wrong about how long they need it.
One thing worth saying plainly, because people assume the opposite: the minimum is a minimum on the length of the rental. It is not a lump sum you hand over on delivery day. If you want to know how billing runs for your situation, ask on the quote call and you will get a straight answer before anything is scheduled.
What does month to month mean after the first three months?
This is the part worth reading carefully, because it is where storage agreements usually go wrong for people. The common pattern in commercial contracts is a term that auto renews for another full term unless you cancel inside a narrow window. Miss the window by a week and you own another year.
That is not how this works. After the three month floor, the rental is month to month in the plain sense of the phrase. You keep the trailer, we keep billing monthly, and either side can stop. There is no evergreen clause waiting for you.
In practice the trailer becomes part of the building. It sits where you put it, the doors are yours, and you get to it on your own schedule rather than during somebody else's gate hours. For most customers the question stops being how long can I keep it and becomes whether they want a second one. The full service is laid out on the storage trailer rentals page, including delivery and the four sizes.
How do you end a storage trailer rental?
The practical side is worth a minute, because a retrieval has the same requirements delivery day had and people sometimes forget that.
The trailer needs to be empty and the doors need to close. A tractor needs a path in and room to swing, so if forklifts, dumpsters or somebody's trailer have appeared around it since spring, clear that before the driver arrives. The ground matters too. A trailer that was spotted on firm gravel in July can be sitting in soft ground after a wet March, and the driver will tell you honestly if it needs to dry out for a day. Those are the same access questions we cover in what delivered and spotted actually means.
Call as soon as you know your date rather than the morning you want it gone. Retrievals get scheduled like deliveries, so the more warning we have, the easier it is to put you on a run that is already heading your way.
What if you only need storage for a few weeks?
This is the honest limit of the product and we would rather you hear it here than find out after the trailer is in your lot.
If you genuinely have one truckload of product that needs somewhere to sit for a fortnight while a floor gets coated, a consumer self storage unit or a corner of somebody's warehouse will cost you less. We compared the two directly in storage trailer versus self storage, and the honest conclusion there was the same: volume and access are what decide it, not the word storage.
That said, describe the actual job on the call before you rule a trailer out. A surprising number of three week needs are not three week needs. Remodels slip. A recall takes longer to sort than anyone budgeted. A seasonal bulge that was supposed to clear in October is still there at Thanksgiving. If the job has any chance of running past the quarter, the minimum stops being the obstacle it looked like.
Can you change sizes or add a trailer partway through?
Adding is the easy one. If you are out of room, we deliver another trailer and park it next to the first. Same arrangement, same terms, starting from its own delivery date.
Swapping is the one to think about first. Trading a 28 footer for a 53 foot storage trailer means a retrieval and a delivery, which is two truck trips and a morning of moving everything from one trailer to the other. It is doable and we do it. It is also the reason we push so hard on sizing correctly on the quote call. Tell us what you are storing, how it is packaged and whether it is on pallets, and the right size is usually obvious in two minutes.
How does the term compare to leasing warehouse space?
This is the comparison that actually matters, because a lot of callers are weighing a trailer against taking a second building.
A lease commits you to space in month thirty that you are sizing today, which is the real risk. It also comes with a floor on square footage that is almost always larger than the problem, plus racking, lighting, utilities and an insurance conversation. None of that is wrong if you are growing into permanent space. It is a lot of commitment to solve six months of overflow.
It is also a different thing from leasing a trailer, which gets confused constantly. A lease is a longer term financial arrangement with its own structure. A rental is not. We unpicked the difference in trailer leasing versus trailer rental, and the short version is that most people who say lease want a rental.
Tell us your dates on the call
The term is rarely the hard part of the decision. The hard part is usually that nobody knows exactly how long the overflow will last, which is the entire reason the arrangement is three months and then open ended rather than a fixed year.
Call (513) 772-9490 with what you are storing, roughly how much of it, and where the trailer would sit, or use the quote form and pick Storage Trailer Rental under Interest in. Call before noon and the trailer can be on site the same day anywhere in our service area, which you can see on the areas we serve page. RMA Fleet has been family owned in West Chester since 1990, running our own trucks, drivers and trailers, and we will tell you plainly when a rental is not the right call for what you are describing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum rental period for a storage trailer?
Three months. That is the floor on every storage trailer rental at RMA Fleet, in all four sizes. After the three months the rental continues month to month for as long as you need it, with no new term and nothing to re-sign. The minimum exists because a rental costs the same two truck trips, one to deliver and spot the trailer and one to retrieve it, no matter how long the trailer stays.
Is there a contract, or can I cancel at any time?
There is no annual contract and no long term commitment. What there is, is the three month minimum at the start. Inside those first three months you are committed to the rental. After that you can end it whenever you want by calling (513) 772-9490 and scheduling the pickup. There is no early termination fee once the minimum is behind you and no renewal clause that rolls you into another term.
What happens after the three months are up?
Nothing happens, and that is the point. The rental continues month to month on the same terms. There is no renewal to sign, no new three month term starting, and no price reset tied to an anniversary date. Plenty of customers who took a trailer for one seasonal push still have it a year or two later because the volume never dropped back, and nobody had to renegotiate anything for that to be true.
How much notice do you need to pick the trailer up?
Call as soon as you know your date. Retrievals get scheduled the same way deliveries do, so the more warning we have, the easier it is to fit you onto a run that is already going your direction. Before the driver comes, make sure the trailer is empty, the doors close, and there is a clear path and room to swing. If equipment has piled up around the trailer or the ground has gone soft, tell us on the call so nobody makes a wasted trip.
Can I rent a storage trailer for just one month?
Not from us. The minimum is three months and we would rather say that up front than quote you something that does not fit. If you genuinely need storage for a few weeks, a self storage unit will cost you less for that volume. Call anyway and describe the job, because short needs have a habit of becoming long ones, and if there is any chance of the work running past the quarter a trailer is usually the better answer.
